Why Microsoft doesn’t really care about the UK

Microsoft CampusHere’s a theory, and I’ll admit it’s a wild one, but here goes: the left hasn’t got a clue what the right’s doing at Microsoft.

Here we are, four days after Microsoft first announced that it wouldn’t be selling the Internet Explorer-less Windows 7 E editions after all, and still the UK arm of the company can’t answer the most basic questions on the topic.

What version will people who pre-ordered the E editions receive? Will we now have upgrade versions in the UK? What about the Family Pack? All of these fundamental questions remain unanswered since Friday evening. (Update at 2.20pm: Microsoft has now confirmed some of these details - click here to read our report).

Why? Because (I suspect) the first Microsoft’s UK team knew of the decision to drop E editions was when they read it on the Microsoft blog, like the rest of us. Microsoft UK may have battalions of “product managers” holed up in Reading and its flashy offices in Victoria, but the company is run out of Redmond. Always has been, always will be.

As talented and as likeable as many of Microsoft’s UK team are, they have little or no influence on the key decisions being made about Windows, Office, Bing or any of the other key products - even when those decisions relate directly to their region, as with the E editions.

How do I know Microsoft UK didn’t see the E editions announcement coming? Because at 5:15pm on Friday night - long after most tech journalists have headed down the pub - it issued a cowardly press release, informing us that we’ll be paying more than twice as much for Windows Anytime Upgrades as the US. Crucially, it also stated that we wouldn’t be getting the Family Pack ”because the Family Pack is designed as an upgrade SKU, and upgrade SKUs of Windows 7 E will not be available in the UK until at least 2010″.

Microsoft Launches Popfly: Mashup App Creator Built On Silverlight

Microsoft will announce the private beta launch of Popfly this morning, a new Silverlight application that allows users to create mashups, widgets and other applications using a very cool and easy to use web-based graphical interface. We previously covered the launch of Yahoo Pipes and compared five different applications that let you mix data and build applications online. At the time we mentioned how this space was really heating up – and how Pipes from Yahoo simplified the creation of mashups and mini-applications by providing a drag+drop interface. Microsoft are the latest entrants in this market, and they have completely leapfrogged every other application we have seen so far.

Popfly is a big leap forward from the competitors above because it lets you do so much more, and it is one of the nicest web application interfaces I have ever seen. With Popfly, you can create applications, mashups, web pages and widgets (gadgets) and it is all tied together in a social network (as part of the Live Spaces platform) where you can connect with other users and publishers of applications. Mashups are created by dragging in and connecting ‘blocks’ which produce an output. Blocks are modules that connect to various web services API’s, and even today there are dozens of different blocks that work with a whole variety of different web services.

See additional screen shots and a link to a screencast on the Popfly overview page here.

Seeing applications like Popfly coming out of Microsoft is something that I couldn’t have imagined all too long ago – and together with the recent Silverlight announcements (which we were also very excited about) the new Microsoft is really starting to come out through their product releases. Popfly so far seems to be another potential big hit from the new Microsoft under Ray Ozzie (Ozziesoft).

Invites: While the private beta is very limited (even within Microsoft), we do have TEN invitations to send out. Leave a comment about how you would use Popfly and the best (or funniest) ten will be sent an invitation to the application.

Microsoft to Push Silverlight via Redesigned Website

Microsoft SilverlightSeveral months ago, Microsoft inserted themselves into the RIA framework business - years too late and against pretty scary odds - with the initial release of the Silverlight framework. Microsoft Silverlight is the online counterpart to the Microsoft .NET 3.0 Framework and a direct Adobe Flash/Flex competitor.

Microsoft isn't new to the whole "virtual" monopoly business (where a single company holds the entire market thanks to "superior technology" and "better business sense") - it's just not too often that they're on the wrong side of this particular proverbial fence.

When Silverlight was first announced and PopFly, Microsoft's social network built to demonstrate and hopefully kickoff Silverlight, were simultaneously launched; we were quick to appreciate the technical aspects of .NET and WPF taken online, but were careful to make it clear

that we didn't think it stood much of a chance.

But things might be on the verge of a big change. Large portions Microsoft's website are in the middle of a redesign that will feature a fully Silverlight-powered interface - doing away with HTML and everything else. We've had a chance to test the new interface (currently in beta), and here's what we think:

UBS Financial renews lease at downtown Miami tower

UBS Financial Services has renewed its lease at a landmark downtown Miami office tower.

bank-of-america-tower-at-intl-place-2The company will pay $7.5 million over five years for about 35,000 square feet in the Bank of America Tower at International Place, 100 SE Second St.

The financial services giant has been a tenant in the 600,000 square-foot tower since 1994, said Tony Puente, the real estate agent for the landlord.

Puente said it was the largest lease renewal in downtown Miami so far this year. He said the deal brings the tower’s occupancy rate to 92 percent despite a struggling commercial real estate market.

Puente, senior vice president of Fairchild Partners, represented landlord Wealth Capital Management. Colleen B. Newcomer, president of CBN Commercial Real Estate Services, represented UBS.

The 47-story tower, known for its lights that change color throughout the year, was designed by architect I.M. Pei and opened in 1987.

Bank of America will close 10 percent of branches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bank of America Corp.'s CEO Ken Lewis said he is planning to shrink the bank's 6,100-branch network by about 10 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported today.

The newspaper said Lewis told investors of the plans at a meeting last week in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the bank's headquarters are located. The Journal cited unidentified people familiar with the discussion.

American Airlines, 1961

American Airlines, 1961 by Lady Wulfrun.
Looking out of a cabin window at the Starboard engines of an in-flight American Airlines Lockheed L-188A Electra in August 1961.

The L-188 Electra was an American turboprop airliner built by Lockheed. It was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States. It made its maiden flight in 1957, and when originally delivered had performance only slightly inferior to that of a turbojet airliner while at a lower operating cost.

The design of the Electra was started by Lockheed in 1954, and the following year the company received a launch order from American Airlines. The prototype first flew on December 6, 1957. The aircraft is a low-wing monoplane with retractable tricycle landing gear, powered by four Allison 501D turboprops. Standard accommodation was for 66 to 88 passengers, with an optional high-density layout for 98 passengers. The initial production version was the L-188A. Later a longer-range L-188C was produced. A total of 170 aircraft were built, with production stopped earlier than planned due to the lack of confidence in the design after two fatal crashes. The aircraft were modified following the accidents but by then customers were interested in operating turbojets. Most of the aircraft currently in service are operated as freighters. In 1957 the United States Navy issued a requirement for an advanced patrol aircraft. Lockheed proposed a development of the Electra which was later placed into production as the P-3 Orion.

American Airlines Ramps Up Activation With NFL Teams

signed a three-year deal with the New England Patriots making the carrier the official airline and an official sponsor of the NFL team. The deal also encompasses the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer and Gillette Stadium, where both teams play their home games. Financial terms were not revealed.

American Airlines said it would activate the alliance through the teams' media properties, including TV and radio programming, out-of-home advertising and in-stadium signage, as well as online assets including Patriots.com and RevolutionSoccer.net. American Airlines marketing is expected to support the Patriots game in London at Wembley Stadium against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 25 as part of the NFL's International Series.

In addition, American Airlines will fly many of the players who comprise the Patriots' 50th Anniversary Team for a ceremony in their honor at the Patriots' regular season opener against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 14.

The deal comes on the heels of a sponsorship alliance signed in July between American Airlines and the NFL's St. Louis Rams that includes an American Airlines patch on practice jerseys and other activation. The airline also has a deal as the official airline of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys that runs through 2019, and among other sports-related deals has naming rights at American Airlines Center in Dallas and American Airlines Arena in Miami.

This week, American Airlines also signed a deal with NYC & Company, the marketing, tourism and partnership organization for the City of New York, supported by marketing offering specially discounted airfares between New York and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami for flights between Sept. 15 and Dec. 12, 2009 (some dates embargoed around Thanksgiving).

American Airlines will use its relationship with the Revolution to augment its MLS partnership, which the carrier said "has yielded strong results in the U.S. Hispanic market." "We have focused more closely on developing affinity marketing opportunities with major sports and entertainment entities because they offer a great fit with our customers and our network, and both the Patriots and the Revolution can deliver that for American," Charlie Schewe, American's managing director, passenger sales - Northeast Region, said in a statement. "We are also very excited to see the Patriots play this year in London, a city that American serves from Boston Logan Airport with three daily nonstop flights."

Phone as airline boarding pass coming to American Airlines

The US airline industry, with airlines still using decades-old planes and FAA air-control computers running less processing power than the smartphone that’s being used to write this post, isn’t exactly quick to adopt new technologies. But, they’re slowly starting to catch on.

qr code airport Phone as airline boarding pass coming to American AirlinesIn their search to attract more customers and streamline operations, American Airlines has announced that they’re shunning paper-based boarding passes and e-tickets in favor of using electronic boarding passes. The cellphone-as-boarding-pass program is now available to American Airlines travelers departing from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

American is offering eco-travelers looking to save a few trees and techie-flyers alike the option to use their mobile phone as an electronic boarding pass. Upon checking-in via AA.com (which now has a mobile version), American will email electronic boarding passes to customers with email-capable cellphones. These e-boarding passes contain barcodes that can be scanned by TSA security personnel and American Airlines gate-crews at O’Hare.

The move follows similar programs rolled out by Continental Airlines and Delta Airlines at select airports across the US. Continental launched their own electronic boarding pass program last year, followed by Delta’s own phone-based paperless boarding pass program earlier this year.

American says it will expand the program to American Airlines travelers departing from Los Angeles International and John Wayne Orange County airports starting November 17.

Now, with US airlines starting to finally embrace technologies like in-flight internet access and mobile phone-based boarding passes, we’re sure to see the FAA start to upgrade their antiquated air-control system. Right?

American Express Headquarters

Frost Design was approached by American Express to develop global branding graphics for its new Asia-Pacific headquarters in Sydney. The aim of the graphics was to reinforce the global brand while engaging staff in an attractive work environment. Frost used historical imagery from the company's archive and black-andwhite photographs by Annie Leibovitz, from the 'Experience life' campaign. The imagery was then applied to floor-toceiling feature walls, desk mats, privacy film and room identification.

Marketing Cuts: Long-Term Mistake?

With many large corporations losing millions of dollars each month, one popular reaction has been to cut down on the money earmarked for marketing. However, many experts are wondering how smart that move is when considering its long-term effects.

Sure, spending more on money can help you save money today. But down the line, a company could hurt its potential growth (or re-growth). If you think about it, there is a reason why companies have been spending billions of dollars in marketing.

Another example of this practice can be found by looking at American Express. Due to being in the struggling financial industry, they’ve needed to find ways to stay afloat. One of their solutions has been to cut down on marketing. According to numerous reports, American Express reduced their marketing in the second quarter by about 50% — or more than $300 million.

Bart Narter, who is with research firm Celent, put it nicely when talking to Bloomberg News.

Said Narter: “You can cheat your brand for a little bit and not lose, but do it for too long and people start forgetting about you.”

Being forgotten will hurt your business much more than this current economy.

Intel Wireless Power Transmission

Intel is working on a way for your laptop to get not just data wirelessly, but power as well. The company claims to have made progress in increasing the efficiency of a technique for wirelessly powering consumer devices.

(Intel wireless demonstration - light bulb powered without wires)

Magnetic fields are used to broadcast up to sixty watts of power for short distances - two or three feet. Only 25% of the power is lost in transmission.

“Something like this technology could be embedded in tables and work surfaces,” said Justin Rattner, Intel’s chief technology officer, “so as soon as you put down an appropriately equipped device it would immediately begin drawing power.”

“In the future, your kitchen counters might do it,” Mr. Rattner said. “You’d just drop your espresso maker down on them and you would never have to plug it in.”

The project is being led by Joshua R. Smith, an Intel researcher in Seattle, Washington. Marin Soljacic, an MIT physicist, pioneered the original technique, called resonant magnetic fields. Read more about this technology in an earlier article - Wireless Power For Laptops, Cellphones?

The idea for wireless power transmission was first suggested by Nicola Tesla. Science fiction writers eagerly seized on the idea in the early twentieth century. In The Mightiest Machine, a novel serialized in Astounding Science-Fiction in 1934, the technology makes an appearance:

Aarn pushed a second standard into view, which was surmounted by a metal bowl that closely resembled a deep soup dish. The inner surface was evidently a parabolic one, made up of a maze of tiny coils, each oriented carefully toward some definite aim, while the entire rim of the "soup dish" was a single larger coil. Carefully Aarn adjusted it so that it pointed toward the flickering cage of copper wires, and beyond it to the apparatus at the other end of the bench. This apparatus seemed fairly simple, merely a number of standards with various arrangements of wires. Two parallel copper bars, a double spiral made of two insulated wires, two metal disks.

Intel powers netbook via thin air Wireless juice due 2015

The demo setup included a hefty transmitter and receive-coil pair in which the receive coil had at its center a small speaker, with both the audio signal and the power required to drive the speaker being transmitted wirelessly.

The WREL, as its name implies, transmits power by setting up a resonant relationship between the transmitter and the receive coil, much as does the battery recharger in your wireless electric toothbrush.

However, as Intel researcher Emily Cooper told The Reg, the WREL's power transmission is "very different from the electric toothbrush charger [power] that falls off after about a millimeter."

Although the demo was transmitting only about one or two watts at a distance of over a meter, Cooper claimed that in Intel's Seattle lab, they've managed to power a netbook at distances of between one and two meters, providing between 14 and 20 watts. She also said that lab tests had powered 40 and 60-watt light bulbs.

Research@Intel: Wireless Resonant Energy Link demo

Intel's wireless-power prototype - transmitter on the right, speaker-equipped receive coil on the left

Cooper demonstrated that the receiver didn't drop or attenuate the signal when it changed its orientation in the transmitted beam. Even at a 90 degrees orientation to the transmitter, the receive coil's tinny speaker's tunes remained equally tinny. Her explanation: "As long as we're capturing some of the flux from this source, we can transduce that."

She also pointed out that the transmitted power is not subject to the familiar inverse square law, which decrees that signal strength is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the transmitter. "That's what's interesting about this coupling mechanism," she said, "there are ways to make the transfer efficiency constant until you reach a certain point."

Indian will Buy Half of London by 2017!

London: Indian-trotters world can buy half of London in 2017. According to estimates by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj (JLLM), a real estate company, Indians could spend as much as 128000 crore rupees (15 million pounds) in residential property in the United Kingdom, particularly London in the next decade, According to the Times of India.

The survey indicates that 1.9 million households in India are expected to have wealth of more than $ 500000 in the next 10 years, giving globally engaged the Indians money to buy assets abroad.
According to experts, research JLLM can be considered a reliable indicator of trends increasingly volatile property market. Companies belonging to cities like London are betting the Indians’ increasing purchasing power and greater engagement with the world, notably through education abroad.

Research indicates that London is increasingly international centre for higher education and the number of Indian students in the study; it has quadrupled since 2005 to nearly 20000. The report predicts that this trend can only continue, given to an increase cooperation programmers between India and London universities.

JLLM report of what is now the ideal time for other real estate companies to exploit opportunities in the Indian market, so that the product directly to them. On Monday, British-owned Company, Berkeley Group said that will soon launch two of its most interesting in exhibitions in Mumbai and Delhi next month.

Chipmaker Intel Vs Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)

Recently Chipmaker Intel Corporation plays the game against Advance Micro Devices (AMD) and paid retailer not to sell PCs using chip made by AMD. This new accusation made by European Union Antitrust Regulators.

The ’statement of objections’ from the European Commission is an expansion of the 2007 charges that Intel gave computer makers rebates to limit their use of AMD chips or avoid them altogether.

According to this, commission is now weighing charges Intel unlawfully swindled with both the wholesale and retail channels in an effort to contain its rivals

Intel lawyer Steve Rodgers stated that “he was disappointed by the new charges, which centered on whether it was lawful or not to issue price discounts. The result will be higher computer prices because it prevents Intel from offering discounts

Intel was given eight weeks to respond to the charges. It would study them in detail before responding to the Commission in writing.

So it is very surprising that technology giant is following such kind of unethical marketing strategies. There must be a healthy competition in the marketing. I hope in future, we will not hear or read such kind of shameful things again.

Forex Chart Types

1. There are three main types of charts that are used by most traders in the forex market. Two of them, bar charts and candlestick charts, display basically the same information in a different visual mediums. The other type of chart, perhaps the most common in finance and trading in general, is the simple line chart.

Line Chart

Sometimes the line chart represents the day's average price for a particular currency pair. Still other times it is the closing price. It is useful for looking at long term direction of prices and for the correlation of a currency pair with other variables, such as commodity prices or trade defects. On most good websites, any number of different variables can be grouped together to see how they correlate in the real world.

2.The major strength of the line chart is that it is easy to read and spot directional changes. The major weakness is that there is no way to see daily price volatility.

Bar Chart

The next type of chart is the bar chart. Like most charts, it has two notches on it, one representing opening and one representing closing costs. The one on the left represents the opening cost, the one on the right represents the closing. The edges of each bar represent the highs and lows for the day.

3. There are few advantages that the bar chart offers over the candlestick chart, other than accessibility for first time chart readers. The candlestick chart offers all the same information, but in a manner that lets the reader who is familiar with the format pick up the information in a quicker manner.

Candlestick Chart

Candlestick charts are perhaps the most popular type of chart for the forex market and forex websites in general. They instantly let a reader know what's gone on that day and where the market has moved. For more information on how to read candlestick charts, see the article, “candlestick patterns.”

Currency Rates

Currency Exchange and Currency transfers for your Property Purchase Abroad.

The Foreign Currency Exchange market is the world’s largest financial market, in excess of 1.5 trillion US dollars are being exchanged daily.

The process of Foreign currency exchange transfers couldn’t be easier. and as most services – money transfer is a free service with our Foreign Exchange partner.

However, be aware that some companies make charges for transfering money abroad.

Here is a simple 3 step guide:

Step 1. Open an account

Complete an Application Form and ensure you have usually two forms of ID: (1) photographic (2) proof of residence.

Step 2. Buy your currency

Speak to a currency dealer and they will give you the current market rate. If you are happy with the quotation they will buy the currency on your behalf. This trade is usually confirmed in writing by way of a deal receipt and usually provides instructions on how, when, and where to make payment for your currency.

Step 3. Get your currency

Once cleared funds are received by your dealer, they will promptly transfer your exchanged currency to any bank account of your choice, worldwide, the same day.

Other than just choosing any particular day to exchange your money, you could choose other dates to make the currency exchange. It may be that you have decided to buy a new property that won’t need the final balance to be paid until 18 month’s time. In this case, it may suit you to do a ’spot deal’ today for the deposit and arrange for a ‘forward deal’ for the final balance. By doing this, you will have just ‘fixed’ the purchase price to your home currency and will have ensured that you don’t get caught out by a weakening home currency, or a strengthening one in the country of your purchase. This can save people thousands.

Here are 4 basic types of transaction:

Spot Contract
A spot contract is undertaken when you buy currency at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of the transaction and make payment within two working days. This transaction is typically used for deposit payments on property or for full payment if the funds to pay for the transaction are available.

Forward Currency Contracts
A forward contract is undertaken when you fix the exchange rate now for a specific date from one to 24 months in the future. As an example, your final payment for a home abroad may be the equivalent of £100,000. You could fix that exchange rate today with a small deposit, and pay for the bulk of that transaction at the completion of the forward contract. To guarantee the exchange rate, private clients will have to pay for at least 10% of the value straight away (a margin deposit) and the balance on or before the maturity of the contract

Fancy cut Diamonds

The information provided on a diamond report pertaining to proportions is critically important for round brilliant cut diamonds. Unfortunately, it is only of minimal use with fancy shapes, (marquise, pear shape, emerald cut, princess cut, ect.). For fancies, you must rely on your own eye to tell whether or not the proportioning is acceptable, to pick up flatness or dark spots such as "bow-tie" which results from poor proportioning.

Within the popular fancy shapes, certain deviations have been established as standard. Some fall within acceptable range, while other do not. Deviations, which exceed acceptable tolerances, can seriously reduce a diamond's beauty and value. One of the most obvious deviations in fancy shape proportioning is the "bow tie", or "butterfly" affect, a darkened area across the center or widest part of the diamond. The bow tie is most commonly seen in the pear shape or marquise shape and may exist in other fancy shapes. The degree of disproportion is directly related to the degree to which the bow tie is pronounced. The larger the bow tie, the greater degree of the incorrect proportion.

Fancy shape diamonds can be cut too broad or too narrow, and the pavilion can be cut too deep or too shallow. The Dimensions for fancy shape diamonds are not as important as they are for round diamonds. However, there are length to width ratios that are considered normal and deviations may result in lower prices.

Marquise: 1.75:1 to 2.25:1
Pear Shape: 1.50:1 to 1.75:1
Emerald Cut: 1.50:1 to 1.75:1
Oval: 1.50:1 to 1.75:1

Prices for fancy shape diamond generally are 15% to 20% below round diamond prices at the wholesale level, holding the quality constant, depending on trends and fads.

Grading Polished Diamonds For Cut

The cutting of a diamond and its proportioning, called "Make" in the jewelry trade, are of extreme importance. The fire (variety and concentration of the prismatic colors emitted) and the brilliance (liveliness or sparkle, of the diamond) directly depend on the proper cutting and proportioning of the diamond. Cut refers not only to the shape of the diamond, but its proportions and finish, factors that influence the final cost of the diamond. Diamonds deliver the most intense flashes and variety of colors to the eye when properly cut of any of gemstones.

When talking about the cut of a stone it is important to be familiar with the anatomy of a diamond. The illustration below is for a round brilliant cut diamond. Different diamond shapes have the same components, however special cuts, radiant cut, princess cut, and all custom cuts have additional facets for added brilliance.
